Nowadays, for the production of extrusion and drawing Dies excellent and economical processes are available, especially with wire and plunger erosion machines. Section Dies produced by spark erosion, however, have a surface melted layer, which affects both section quality, and Die life adversely. Dies made in this way have to undergo elaborate and very difficult finishing treatment and optimisation at the hand of highly trained technicians. This largely manual work is increasingly responsible for high Die costs.
Closure of the Die between the two cylinders produces a sealed, closed system in which the STREAMER (grinding medium) is forced back and forth through the clamped work piece (section Die) in flow direction. A STREAMER heating and cooling system with thermostatic temperature control ensures constant viscosity of the STREAMER throughout the processing time, and therefore good reproducibility. By means of a process control system the machine automatically regulates other parameters such as its flow rate, the pressure, polishing speed, etc.
Besides the machine, the STREAMER itself is the second and no less important element. It is a polymer plastic mass that is supplied in various viscosities, permeated by special grids, and acts like a viscose file. |
